The County of Frontenac's Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) consists of three documents: Directions for Our Future which serves as a guide to sustainability in the Frontenacs, and two annual updates, Sustainable Actions 2009 and 2010. Sustainable Actions 2010 presents a list of projects that have been identified and assessed on the basis on their contribution to the sustainability of the County now and into the future.
People interested in the future of the County have come forward in great numbers to contribute to the development of Frontenac's ICSP. In total, more than 600 different stakeholders have offered their time and resources to meet, comment, provide insights and offer their ideas on making the Frontenacs a better place to live and work. By correspondence, email, one-on-one conversations, surveys, web input, and group discussion over more than 5 years, these contributions have been made all in support of the common goal of sustainability: reaching a common understanding of who we are, where we want to be and how we can begin to get there over the next 50 years.
Since beginning this sustainability course, many initiatives have been identified that are leading us toward this future vision. The current count is at 66. With the participation of so many people interested in our Frontenac community, over 113 opportunities are currently identified that will move us closer to the County-wide sustainable future we seek.
These projects, advancing sustainability in the Frontenacs, can be led, supported or financed by any individual, group, organization or municipality, separately or jointly. When County Council identifies an opportunity or is invited to be involved with a project, it will consider its role and the nature of support it is prepared to offer.
When County Council determines financial resources are to be contributed, the sources of these funds can require further consideration. Those projects which County Council chooses to support through Federal Gas Tax funds will be thoroughly assessed to ensure they meet the federal criteria.
Each project, discussed herein, has also been considered from the perspective of readiness including such questions as: Is there a project champion or lead? Has a scope of work been developed? Are partners in place where needed? We look forward to your ongoing input as we implement Directions for Our Future with guidance from Sustainable Actions 2010. One of the most important elements of any ICSP is to ensure ongoing identification and implementation of projects, policies and actions that support sustainability. To this end, the first annual meeting (Sustainability Workshop 2010) was held on September 30, 2010 to (1) review and report our progress towards sustainability and (2) update Sustainable Actions. We continue to seek community partnerships with organizations that are interested in implementing actions that support sustainability. Every stakeholder has an important role in ensuring a sustainable future for the Frontenacs so it may be appreciated and enjoyed by future generations.
